Yoga pose for sciatic nerve pain
This yoga pose for sciatic nerve pain is a supportive stretch that softens and rests the muscles in the back of the hips and buttocks. With these muscles at rest, the pressure is taken off the sciatic nerve. Piriformis syndrome and sciatic nerve pain down the leg are thereby relieved.
While practicing this pose, the first chakra—the root chakra—is opened. The ability to ground is increased, thereby banishing fear in the body. Feeling comfortable in the body, feeling worthy of prosperity, and feeling safe and secure enough to let go and relax are developed as this energy balances.
Instruction
- Starting in Table Pose, slowly lie down on your stomach.
- Bend the right knee and bring it in line with the hip (the leg will be at a right angle).
- Stack the forearms and rest the head down, turned toward the right.
- Close the eyes and breathe for 2-4 minutes.
- Transition to the other side: slowly straighten the bent leg, turn the head to the other side.
- Bend the left knee, bringing it in line with the hip, at a 90-degree angle.
- To release: straighten the bent leg and slowly come back into Table Pose and practice Child’s Pose. Transition slowly and mindfully.
