Shanti (shän(t)ē): peace, inner calm

Shanti Yoga Therapy combines the science of yoga therapy, nervous system regulation and ancient yogic philosophy to help individuals find balance, reduce stress and heal from chronic conditions. Our work focuses on guiding you out of survival mode and into a state of safety, calm and self-awareness; so that deep restoration can occur.

Whether you’re living with chronic back pain or hip issues, anxiety, depression, or burnout, yoga therapy provides evidence-based practices to restore mind-body balance. Every thought, emotion and experience is processed through the nervous system. When stress patterns remain unresolved, they manifest as physical pain, illness, emotional overwhelm and disconnection.

At Shanti Yoga Therapy, we work together with your specific goals to personalize each session for you, weaving together:

  • Gentle and restorative therapeutic yoga postures
  • Breathwork (pranayama) to reset the nervous system
  • Meditation, mindfulness and guided imagery
  • Yogic philosophy and Ayurvedic principles for holistic well-being
  • Compassionate tools to build resilience and presence in everyday life

These practices gradually re-train the nervous system, creating new patterns of response through neuroplasticity. Over time, you’ll move from reactivity and stress toward mindfulness, balance and inner peace. Reprogram nerve signals to release pain cycles and reduce tension. Sessions are safe to practice while healing from injury, in the midst of grief, chronic fatigue or chronic stress.

How Therapeutic Yoga Works

When we live with chronic stress, anxiety, or pain, the nervous system often becomes stuck in survival mode. This constant state of fight-or-flight can lead to fatigue, muscle tension, poor sleep and even chronic illness. Therapeutic yoga helps reset this baseline—guiding the body out of stress response and into the relaxation response, where true healing can begin. In your custom private session, you’ll learn how to use:

  • Restorative and gentle yoga postures: to relieve neck or shoulder pain, back pain, hip pain and joint stiffness
  • Mindful breathing techniques (pranayama): to calm the nervous system and improve oxygen flow
  • Meditation and guided imagery: to quiet the mind and reduce anxiety (including Yoga Nidra and/or mantra)
  • Energy-based practices: incorporate the energy of mudra, the chakra and/or kosha systems to release emotional blockages, deficiencies and restore balance
  • Optional distance reiki: promotes relaxation and balance by channeling healing energy remotely, helping to reduce stress and support the body’s natural ability to heal

With regular practice, therapeutic yoga encourages the body to let go of long-held stress patterns, opening space for healing on every level—physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Clients often notice better sleep, improved flexibility, reduced pain and a greater sense of peace and resilience.

Online yoga therapy sessions make these practices accessible from the comfort of your home, giving you practical tools to manage stress, support recovery and build long-term well-being.

How the Nervous System Works

When the body perceives a threat, the nervous system shifts into survival: fight, flight, or freeze. While this response protects us short-term, staying in this state chronically can create anxiety, chronic illness, pain and fatigue.

The goal of yoga therapy is to restore your natural baseline of safety. Through breath, movement, and mindfulness, we reduce stress hormones, release stored tension and encourage the nervous system to return to equilibrium so you feel more peaceful.

By understanding how your nervous system responds to stress and learning specific practices to regulate it, you’ll uncover new pathways to healing, peace and ease in body, mind and spirit.

Our sessions always start where you are. With compassion, presence and personalized guidance, you’ll learn to listen to your body, release stored tension and rediscover your natural state of balance.

Integrative Practices in Private Online Therapeutic Yoga Sessions

Alongside movement, breathwork and meditation, my private online yoga therapy sessions may also include the healing tools of Yoga Nidra, mudra, mantra and optional distance reiki. These practices are simple, accessible, and deeply effective for reducing stress, easing pain and restoring balance to the mind and body.

Yoga Nidra: Guided Yogic Rest for Stress Relief and Healing

What is Yoga Nidra?
Yoga Nidra, or “yogic sleep,” is a guided meditation that brings the body into deep relaxation while keeping the mind gently aware. Unlike ordinary sleep, Yoga Nidra moves you into a state between wakefulness and dreaming, where the nervous system can fully relax and reset. Many of my clients find Yoga Nidra especially helpful for:

  • Stress relief and nervous system balance: Yoga Nidra activates the parasympathetic nervous system, reducing stress hormones and easing tension
  • Improved sleep quality: a powerful practice for insomnia and restless nights
  • Emotional regulation: helps release stored emotions and supports greater calm and resilience
  • Enhanced clarity and focus: by quieting mental chatter, Yoga Nidra leaves you with more presence and awareness
  • Enhancing mental clarity: by quieting busy thoughts
  • Accessible to all: no experience or flexibility required; simply lie down, listen and relax

Yoga Nidra is widely used for stress management, trauma recovery, anxiety, chronic pain and burnout. Even short sessions can bring the equivalent of hours of rest, making it one of the most effective tools for healing through yoga. In sessions, Yoga Nidra is used so you can experience profound rest and carry that calm into daily life.

Mantra: Healing Through Sound and Vibration

What is a Mantra?

A mantra is a word, phrase, or syllable repeated during meditation to focus the mind and create vibrational healing. The word comes from Sanskrit: man (mind) and tra (tool), literally meaning “a tool for the mind.” In private sessions, mantras are inspired by goals and desired outcomes. They’re also inspired by yoga philosophy or energy healing. Mantras may be spoken aloud, whispered or silently repeated to help you:

  • Calm the nervous system: through sound vibration and steady rhythm
  • Improve concentration: by centering the mind on a single focus, easing worry, quieting distractions and releasing fear and mental tension
  • Supports emotional healing: chanting mantras is linked with reduced anxiety and greater inner peace
  • Connects to higher awareness: many mantras carry spiritual significance, opening the heart and expanding consciousness
  • Boosts mindfulness and presence: by bringing awareness back to sound and breath
  • Cultivates peace and positivity: with affirmations and traditional mantras to redirect mental chatter than brings suffering
  • Strengthen meditation practice: by giving the mind something stronger to anchor the focus during practice

Common examples include but are not limited to Om (universal sound), Om Shanti (peace), or chakra seed sounds like Lam (root chakra, Muladhara), Vam (sacral chakra, Svadhisthana), Ram (solar plexus chakra, Manipura).

Whether whispered, chanted aloud, or repeated silently, mantras help clear mental clutter and bring the mind into stillness. Mantras are easy to learn, powerful to practice and can be combined with breathwork, restorative yoga postures or guided meditation for deeper effect.

Together, Yoga Nidra, mudra, mantra and optional distance Reiki form a powerful trio of practices for stress relief, meditation and holistic healing. They are easy to integrate into our online yoga therapy sessions and in daily life. Practice with breathwork and listening to ambient music to enhance their effects.

Mudra: Hand Gestures to Direct Energy

What is a Mudra?

Mudras are symbolic hand gestures used in restorative yoga postures, breathwork and meditation to channel energy, support focus and deepen awareness. By bringing the fingers together in specific ways, mudras (hand gestures) influence the flow of prana (life force energy) in the body. They are a subtle, yet powerful tool that can use anywhere, even after our sessions together. Benefits include but are not limited to:

  • Relieves stress and anxiety: hand gestures send subtle signals to the nervous system, encouraging relaxation and safety
  • Supports physical health: certain mudras are associated with improved digestion, better breathing, joint health and circulation
  • Enhances meditation and focus: mudras calm the mind, anchor awareness, improve concentration and support mindfulness practices
  • Balances energy in the body: different mudras stimulate or soothe specific elements (earth, water, fire, air, space) and chakras for vitality, inner calm and connection
  • Accessible anywhere: mudras can be practiced sitting at a desk, lying in bed or during meditation.

Examples include Gyan Mudra (thumb and index finger touching) which stimulates the root chakra (Muladhara), eases tension and depression and is extremely calming. It brings the practitioner spiritual openness and ease in meditation. Prana Mudra (touching the tips of the thumb, ring, and little fingers) enhances immunity, improves eyesight, relieves cramps, reduces pain in limbs and legs and improves blood circulation. Brings revitalization to the functioning the lungs and heart (Anahata chakra).

Together, we’ll explore more mudras that best support your health goals so you can integrate them easily into your practice and day-to-day based on the relief or enhancement you are seeking.

Optional Distance Reiki in Therapeutic Yoga Sessions

What is Reiki?
Reiki (pronounced ray-kee) is a Japanese energy healing practice that channels universal life force energy (prana or chi) to encourage relaxation, reduce stress and support the body’s natural ability to heal. It is gentle, safe and non-invasive. Reiki can be offered while you are fully clothed, resting or even from a distance.

What is Distance Reiki?
Distance Reiki allows you to receive the same calming and restorative benefits of Reiki without being in the same physical location. Energy is not bound by space, which makes it possible to experience Reiki anywhere in the world.

Is Reiki right for me?
Reiki is a gentle and non-invasive practice that supports relaxation, stress relief and balance. It can be helpful if you’re dealing with anxiety, chronic pain, fatigue or emotional overwhelm. Because Reiki works on an energetic level, you don’t need prior experience with yoga or meditation to benefit.

Do I have to include Reiki in my session?

Not at all. Reiki is completely optional. Some clients enjoy combining Reiki with yoga therapy for a deeper experience, while others prefer to focus only on movement, breathwork and meditation. Each session is fully customized to your comfort level and health goals.

How do I prepare for a distance Reiki session?
All you need is a quiet, comfortable space where you won’t be disturbed. We can work together with your personal goals and I’ll guide you through the process so you can relax and simply receive.

Benefits of Distance Reiki

  • Reduces stress and anxiety: by calming the nervous system and encourages deeper breathing
  • Supports emotional balance: helps release built-up tension stored in the body
  • Promotes relaxation and comfort: for chronic pain or fatigue
  • Improves sleep: which increases overall energy levels
  • Encourages harmony and holistic well-being: by balancing the energy system (Pranamayakosha) and all layers of being

Reiki in Your Private Yoga Therapy Plan

Reiki is completely optional in your customized yoga therapy sessions. Some clients enjoy adding distance Reiki to deepen relaxation, complement meditation and breathwork, or help release energetic blockages. Others may choose to focus only on movement, breathwork or meditation.

Your session is always designed around your comfort and goals. Reiki will only be included only if it feels supportive to you. Invest in your well-being today!
