“Opportunity is missed by most people because it’s dressed in overalls and looks like work.” – Thomas Edison

That couldn’t be more true, if you ask me. I believe the opportunity he was talking about was growth; growth in our lives, whether it’s personal, interpersonal, professional, romantic, physical or spiritual. Growth is what keeps us moving forward and evolving into the best versions of ourselves.

You may have ideas about how you want to grow and move forward. You may even visualize the life or body you desire. You may feel deep in your cells that you want to change, and you may want something different. Then you may imagine the action necessary for that change and may get scared or never start because it seems like too much work.

Continually stuck in ruts, complaining about your current situation or problems, never willing to change your perspective or get started, you feel stuck. If you finally decide to start, you stick with it for a little bit and then fall right back into your old patterns. Why? Perhaps it’s because you are uncomfortable and you don’t know what to do.

Sound familiar?

I meet a lot of people that are sick and tired of feeling sick and tired. They are so fed up, I imagine they could talk about it for hours, maybe even days. They’re feeding the same story about how they so desperately want to change, but may feel scared to take the first step or feel completely overwhelmed with breaking the process down.

Change isn’t easy, but it’s worth it

I know what it feels like to be in this space. I’ve been there and done it. I fed the story for decades, feeling hopeless, unworthy, and intimidated. Real, lasting change seemed so out of reach as I struggled to find the motivation to get started. For me, I needed to face death to get that motivation, but rock bottom is different for everyone.

Drawing upon my own experience, I can offer simple steps and solutions and show you the door. However, it’s up to you to walk through it.

The secret is this: you have to get uncomfortable.

You have to be willing to put in the work and you have to have faith that it’s all going to be ok. Better than ok, in fact.

If you’re working with me specifically, know that I have done this work and will be there to support you and guide you, but what you’re really going to find is that you are your biggest supporter. You’ll discover that you possess strength that you didn’t know you had.

The only way to get past the things that are holding you back is to go through them. That means you don’t hit that wall and turn around or try to find a shortcut: you go through it, uncomfortable as it may be.

Lasting change isn’t going to come from making excuses, running away or quitting when it gets hard.

Those moments where you want to give up are pivotal opportunities to stick with it and work toward the life you truly desire.

Those moments are your tipping points, and where magic happens.

It’s up to you if you want to fall back into being sick and tired, to bail on yourself, or to release your resistance, create a new habit, and get on your way to feeling better.

It’s in those moments that you really get to know yourself.

You either fight for it, or you give up and settle for less.

“Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” – Thomas Edison

What I see happen often is that people put in the work necessary to start to see positive changes in their lives. They start to feel better, breath by breath, letting go and moving forward, gaining insights, until something uncomfortable comes up.

This is the crossroads we all face at one time or another.

You’ve got a choice here: ride the wave of discomfort and see it through to the other side (growth!), or let human nature kick in and run (and stay stuck in those ruts).

If you want to move forward in life, you need to face that something must change.

If you continue to stay trapped in the same routines, you will get the same results.

Habits formed over years or decades will not disappear overnight.

Moment-by-moment decisions make your goals attainable and help you undo bad habits. Every breath into discomfort can bring you closer to your goals.

Being uncomfortable is a good sign that change and growth are right around the corner.

People tend to get attached to their depression, anxiety, and believing their past defines who they are. People cling to their physical limitations, excess weight and injuries.

It’s scary to discover who we are without those things, but trust me, they don’t define us.

Get uncomfortable now.
